Group research

From our research we found that a male contingent would most likely view our film. They seemed to like the idea of a crime film, as they liked the cleaver writing techniques and story-lines. They also liked the idea of a fast pace movie with a main authoritative figure. When we asked them about 'Big Jon' they said that he was the ideal character they were looking for and found him very interesting.

Editing

We tried to use a low-angle shot when Matt Don and Sam G are walking from the car park to meet Big Jon but we decided to not use it because there was lighting issues and the camera was shaking.

Editing

We decided to take out the action of Matt and Sam walking down Presberg Road and Kyran walking away from the car as we believed that it was too boring and didn't give the audience any information or entertainment.

Re-filming

We had to re-film our car sequence as the variety of camera shots used was limited. We used a two-shot for the entire sequence, and the light was also of poor quality. So we re-filmed with a variety of shots, including low-angle shots and shot-reverse-shots. This will make our film more appealing and interesting.

Re-filming

We forgot our camera at school and had to use Matt's brother's camera. This wasn't very efficient as it was only 14 mega-pixels and in limited light, it didn't work well. So our footage didn't turn out well. Thus, we will have to pick-up at a later date.

Editing

We went out to re-film our car sequence yet left the camera at school. Thus, we had to improvise and borrow Matt's brother's camera. Yet, this was only 14 mega-pixels and once we uploaded the footage onto the mac, you could clearly see the difference in quality and this didn't look right.

Editing

We attempted a jump cut to show that time has moved on as Matt and Sam get closer to Jono. This didn't match the pace of our earlier footage. Therefore we had to remove it as it didn't make sense and wasn't really needed.

Editing

We had trouble with natural sound in the background of our clips. For example traffic and wind. We had to insert markers to tone down, or some cases delete audio clips, to make sure our soundtrack and speech could be heard. For example where Matt and Sam exit the subway, the traffic noise was very loud and useless to us, so we had to delete it.

Editing

We originally had a two shot of Jono and Kyran for an entire scene, with no variation of shots. This we had to change, and did so by re-filming. Once we had done this, we editing accordingly so we could incorporate our new angles. This was important as it made our sequence more appealing and entertaining to our target audience.

Editing

Some of our footage showing Matt's journey to Sam was un-needed and lengthened the duration of our opening sequence. It was un-necessary and well felt would be boring for our audience to view, and they wouldn't get anything from it. Also the pan we had originally tried with this piece of footage, didn't turn out as well as we had hoped, and this is another reason to why we got rid of it.

Shooting

Friday 13th December: Film the opening to our film. This will include the establishing shot of Matt at New Malden Car park. We will also film the meeting of Sam and Matt's characters. We will also attempt to film on both Presberg and Thetford roads. This will track Matt and Sam's journey to Jono.

Monday 16th December: Film the subway scene with Sam, Matt and Jordan.

Sunday 2nd February: Film the final scenes with Jono in the car with Kyran, and the final meet between Matt, Sam and Jono.

Friday 7th March: We had to refilm the scene when Jono is speaking on the phone to Matt and Sam. We decided to refilm because we got feedback saying that we needed to use close-up shots of Big Jon to show the audience his facial expressions and emphasise that he is the protagonist. We also decided to refilm the scene when Matt and Sam give the bag to Jono because we wanted to add a range of shots and add more dialouge to show the personalities of the characters. We filmed this just as it was going dark because it emphasises how long it took Matt and Sam to meet Jono.

>This shows that we used close-up shots.

  • This video highlights the dialogue to show the personalities of the characters.

  • Wednesday 12th March: We decided to refilm the scene when Kyran and Jono are in the car because the feedback was stating that Kyran's acting wasn't good. Kyran wasn't available so we had to use someone else. We also refilmed Matt and Sam handing the bag over to Jono. The footage we already had of Matt and Sam handing the bag over to Jono did not match the previous scenes lighting.

Thursday 13th March: The last time we filmed, we forgot the camera so we borrowed Matt's brother's camera. We uploaded the footage and found that it was fuzzy. We had no choice but to refilm and this time Kyran was available. We also used this refilming session to add new shots such as Kyran getting out of the car with the camera filming from outside the car. We also needed to use a range of shots. We had to also refilm Jono's dialouge and Matt's dialouge of the phone conversation. Refilming Matt and Sam handing over the bag to Jono meant that this part of the film took place in the day rather than in the evening which was the time of the day we had previously shot in.

This video emphasises that the footage on Matt's Brother's camera was fuzzy and you could not hear the characters dialogue.

This emphasises that we filmed new shots.

This emphasises that we filmed the scene, Matt and Sam handing Jono the bag, in the day.

We decided to remove our subway scene with Jordan because we felt that it took too long and it was not necessary.

This clip, we made, shows one of our mistakes. We left the tripod in the background, in which it could be seen.

    Inspiration

This shot from the Grand Theft Auto V trailer was the inspiration to the shot where we say Matt's character 'Matt Don.' This shot doesn't reveal much about the character creating sense of mystery about the character, as we want to draw the audience in. The audience will want to watch on because they want to know more about Matt Don.

    Setting

Some of the areas we have chosen are typical of crime films. The areas are hard-hitting and gritty, and this is what we tried to incorporate. Yet we went against some of the codes and conventions of a crime film, by having some of the film set in a middle-class residential area; of which doesn't particularly associate itself with a group of criminals.

    Costume

We decided to go for suits as our costumes for our protagonists to convey their authority and power. This is a common feature of crime films, and we felt it essential to have suits in our film.
