Props

Here are a list of our props:

Phone: So the characters can interact with each other, used in the conversation between Matt and Jono.

Hand-held bag: Enables Sam to carry the goods back to Jono. Normally in crime films a hand-held bag is used to, for example, carry stolen money. So we did this in our film.

Car: We gave Jono a car to make him look authoritative and powerful, as he is the boss.

Newspaper: We chose for Jono to want a newspaper. This creates a juxtaposition as our hard-hitting criminal, wants to be participating in a sophisticated past time.

Target audience

  • Our primary target audience is 18-24 and our secondary audience is 25-40. We feel it will be more appealing to people aged from 18 up to 24.
  • We believe that our primary audience is 18-24 because the type of film it is matches the genre popular with this specific age group. They will form the bulk of our audience.
  • Yet we also feel that the film's secondary audience will be the 25-40 as it will not directly appeal to their tastes in genre, but a minority of this age group will find our film appealing.
  • We also believe that the male 18-24 population will find our film heavily appealing as the genre is aimed at their tastes in genre, and this is a good market to aim for.

Inspiration for characters - 'Sam G'

'Sam G'

The inspiration for 'Sam G's' character is James 'Jimmy' Conway from GoodFellas. He is willing to take a risk, isn't worried to get stuck in, without thinking it through first. He is willing to do things for the team, yet has a sense of greed. He does not want to be outdone, and wants to do a job well. He doesn't take lightly to criticism, yet makes a good associate.

Inspiration for characters - 'Matt Don'

'Matt Don'

The inspiration for 'Matt Don's' character is Turkish from Snatch. He has the respect of others, yet some things may be too much of a risk, and he seeks a different solution. He is fairly clever, and has a soft side. He is fairly level-headed, and this is the image we had in mind for 'Matt Don'.

Issues that we had

  • We didn't think that the storyboard needed pictures but we found out that it is important because it gives us a visual representation in what happens in every scene.
  • We also had problems with deciding on the locations, as we wanted different locations for different scenes, and we needed to try and keep the continuity of location.
  • We also had problems deciding what interactions should occur and where they should occur, in order to create as much affect as possible. These were key interactions between actors, that would help explain the storyline and make it clear to the audience, what is going on.
  • We also faced problems deciding what our soundtrack should sound like, whether certain instruments, such as the drums, should be more upbeat or less intense.
  • We couldn't get the camera to fit on the tripod correctly, this was crucial because it could have interrupted our filming schedule.
  • Limited light meant that we could only film at certain times of the day. If not then there would have been inconsistency between shots, due to limited light, and would have effected our production.
  • On one of the shooting days the car we had used previosly, a mazda, was not available. This car was important because it is the sort of car the character 'Big Jon' would drive. However we had no choice but to borrow another car to film in.

Our storyboard planning

These are images of our storyboard. This took us a few lessons to create, and establishes in what order our shots will occur. It also depicts what will happen in each shot, the type of shot, sound and the length of the shot. This will help us to easily understand what we are doing and the length of each shot.

Plan and mind-mapping of film

This image shows the idea of the opening sequence. It includes what the planned genre of the film is, the costumes, character, locations and the general plot of the film.

Inspiration for characters - 'Big Jon'

'Big Jon':

The inspiration for 'Big Jon' is Bricktop from Snatch. He is authoritative, and is the type of gritty, no-nonsense character we want in our film. He is the boss, and no-one messes with him. He strikes fear into other characters, and is interesting from an audience perspective. This is exactly what we want 'Big Jon' to do.

Story idea

Opening sequence begins with Matt Don standing on top of a car park in New Malden waiting for a call from Sam G. When he receives the phone call, Matt takes the elevator and meets Sam downstairs who has just received a package. Matt and Sam walk down New Malden High Street and on their way they see someone who is intimidated by them. As they walk past the fountain, Matt calls Big Jon, who his rather upset when Matt tells him that it will be 10 minutes before he receives  the package. Big Jon frustratingly hangs up and sends Dean to the shop to get him the telegraph. Meanwhile Matt and Sam are still walking to meet Big Jon and as they walk under the subway they see a hooded figure who gives Sam a package while Matt is waiting impatiently for him as he is wary that Big Jon will not be happy with them if they are late. They both eventually leave and head towards Big Jon. Meanwhile, Dean comes back into the car with The Sun and gives it to Big Jon, who loses his patience as he asked for the telegraph. Big Jon orders Dean to get him the telegraph. Matt and Sam reach Big Jon and Matt says to him that they have the package. As Big Jon gets out of the car he checks the package and glares at Matt and Sam disapprovingly.

Locations

New malden car park: It has been chosen as it has good opportunities for a range of different shots, such as, a match-on-action and high-angle shots. It also overlooks an industrial area, to give our audience the feel this is a gritty crime film.

New malden high street: We choose this location as a way of showing time has passed, and to track 'Matt Don' and 'Sam G's' journey to 'Big Jon'.
New malden fountain: Yet again another location to show 'Matt Don' and 'Sam G's' journey to 'Big Jon'.

Presburg road: Show time has passed, moving closer to 'Big Jon'.

Thetford road: Show time has passed, closer to 'Big Jon'
South lane subway: Meeting with an extra, add action to our film.

Oakdene drive: Final showdown with 'Big Jon'.

Planning session

Jono planning the idea for the story and storyboard. This is our first planning session, and is our basic outline for our film idea.

Risk assessment

  • Wires could be hanging out and there is a danger of people tripping over them.
  • There is a slight chance of us getting mugged in certain locations such as a subway, we have expensive equipment with us and it could attract unwanted attention.
  • Check weather so the weather is similar on filming days. If not it could ruin our film. If the weather doesn't match, it would look odd in our film, and become apparent that we had to re-film.
  • Danger of cars so we need to be careful when going down the high street and in the car park. We need to be careful around cars, as we are filming with them and around them. So scenes take part in the road, so we need to be careful on onrushing cars. Also some of our scenes are filmed in a car, so we need to be careful not to: 1) damage the car or 2) put the car into gear.
This video clip emphasises that we had to be careful of the cars when crossing the road.

Opening sequences analysis

Juno

  • The input of sound makes it seem like the credits are being written and also the changing of the colors of the credits suggests that it is an indie teen film because many films always have their credits in the same font and in the same color
  • The way the credits are presented shows the audience what kind of genre it is.
  • voice over to suggest that she is the main character in the film.
  • flashback to give more insight into the narrative
  • as she walks a title starts to appear on the fence that she is walking alongside which is a good and creative placement of a credit
  • use of crane shot and high angle shot.
  • love song playing in the background which links to an aspect of the films genre romance.
  • the title 'Juno', which indicates the name of the film, is flashing between colors so therefore it stands out which suggests that the title is very important because its the name of the film.
An Officer and a Gentleman
The opening sequence has the character "Zack" Mayo, played by Richard Gere, riding towards the military base to sign up for the Navy's Aviation Officer Candidate School to become a Pilot. The opening sequence follows the main character on his journey, similar to our opening sequence. However our opening sequence follows two people and has two stories going on at one time.

Snatch:

Narrative function: Montage sequence that introduces each character.
Conventions displayed: Bold font, conveying the characters; there is also a continuity with the font, yet not with the coloured background. Title displayed fairly quickly, upon a diamond; which the audience know has been stolen, suggests genre.
Characters introduced: All main protagonists are introduced and the type of character they are; also their character name.
Cinematography: Colours used suggests genre as they are fairly basic, yet bold.
Camera/editing: Camera tracks the diamond as it is passed around, then the money, etc... . Ends back with the diamond in the mans hand; where it started. Editing is tight and cuts between each character smoothly.
